The heaviest of burdens crushes us, we sink beneath it, it pins us to the ground. Conversely, the absolute absence of burden causes man to be lighter than air, to soar into heights, take leave of the earth and his earthly being, and become only half real, his movements as free as they are insignificant. What then shall we choose? Weight or lightness?
We live in a Renaissance for autodidactics. Everyone has the opportunity to master any subject they put their minds to. But in a dopamine optimized world of instant gratification we must master ourselves first.
People think focus means saying yes to the thing you’ve got to focus on. But that’s not what it means at all. It means saying no to the hundred other good ideas that there are. You have to pick carefully. I’m actually as proud of the things we haven’t done as the things I have done. Innovation is saying no to 1,000 things.
